Mail Art

This is a short course on how to create mail art in a raw and textured mixed media style.

I will teach you how to work on envelopes, or you can choose your own preferred substrate (postcards, mailers, recycled cardboard!), and you can send your art across the globe in the post (or send one to me!).

This lesson originally appeared on Life Book 2019 hosted by Tamara Laporte from willowing.org

Lesson Description & Goals

We're going to create some mail art on an envelope and I will be teaching you techniques for a raw expressive portrait with lots of yummy texture. The goals of this lesson are to:

  • play!
  • use simple techniques to achieve a complex textured look
  • enjoy being in touch with the process, yourself and your supplies

At the end of this workshop you will have created a piece of mail art using lots of textured mixed media techniques, you'll be able to send your art in the mail or frame it, the choice is yours.

What Will You Get?

  • One project based lesson
  • Video lesson of approx 30 minutes (detailed & tightly edited)
  • Step-by-step PDF walkthrough, 12 pages
  • Share your progress & connect online
  • Lifetime access
  • Fully downloadable

Type Of Work You Will Learn To Create

Supply List

  • envelope - any size, I used C5. If you don't want to do mail art, you can work on watercolour paper
  • gesso
  • acrylic paint - your favourite colours + white/off-white
  • brayer or lino roller
  • key card, palette knife and/or Catalyst wedge
  • brushes
  • coloured pencils - your favourite colours
  • charcoal pencil or crayon/stick
  • watercolours
  • heat tool or hair dryer

Who Is This Course For?

This lesson is especially for you if:

  • you have trouble getting started
  • you find it hard to like your own work
  • you get so intimidated by the beautiful work that gets posted
  • you don't dare to post your work
  • you feel like you or your art isn't good enough

This lesson is for you, because you are me and I am you. I see your struggle and efforts and have experienced them myself (and sometimes still do). You can do this. Your art is a beautiful expression of yourself and your feelings (be they 'postitive' or 'negative' ones) and it is so welcomed here.

Self-Paced / Fully Downloadable / Lifetime Access

On this workshop you are absolutely free to go at your own pace and work as quickly or slowly as suits your personal needs and circumstances. You will have lifetime access and you can download all class materials to your own device.

What students said about the course

Who knew painting an envelope was so fun! Love the textures and how the writing from the first step shows through. Thanks, Iris for a fun lesson and for inspiring me. I am totally going to be looking around for what else I can paint on next. 🙂
Brindi Apostol

Loved this lesson. Didn’t have an envelope so used a medium gift bag. Thank you Iris.
Linda Fleming Cooney

This was so much fun. I did it on watercolor paper instead of an envelope.
Bryn Phillips Nguyen

Thank you Iris Fritschi-Cussens for such a relaxing lesson. It was just what I needed this afternoon.
Ingrid Dodd

I used a paper bag and used it for a gift bag. Fun lesson, thanks Iris! I love making things for people & it would be so exciting to receive something like this in the mail.
Anna Rutherford

This was a really fun lesson! I liked that it encouraged you to jump right in with whatever supplies you want. I ended up using my Jane Davenport Power Pastels which I have had for a long time but never used
Maggie Ortiz

Thank you Iris Fritschi-Cussens, so fun doing your lesson! I’m thinking of all kinds of paper to paint on!

About your teacher

front-page-iris-1000Hello creative person! I’m Iris from iris-impressions.com and this website is where I offer online mixed media & art journaling courses and workshops.

I’m a mixed media artist from London and I believe in the magical powers of art! To me making art serves many purposes: fun, relaxation, healing, processing feelings, making pretty things, connecting with others (and more that I can't think of right now!).

I believe in simplicity and clarity when it comes to both painting and teaching. My videos & PDFs don't waste your time and will tell you exactly what you need to know so you can spend more time actually creating art.

We are all on this journey together, learning about how to face our fears and find inspiration. I love sharing honestly about my joys, struggles and discoveries (plus techniques and art supplies!). My courses are a culmination of everything I have learned so far!

I really hope you will join me on Mail Art!
